Things Are Looking Good for Spirit Landing

From The Planetary Society:

Spirit is now on target to land within 100 meters or so of its desired landing site.

Think about the previous sentence for a moment. This is a spacecraft that was launched from a moving, rotating Earth almost seven months ago. It will have traveled a total of 302.6 million miles (487 million km) before it reaches Mars – a target that is also traveling in space as it rotates on its axis.

Once it reaches Mars, Spirit will go from traveling approximately 12,000 miles per hour (5.4 kilometers per second) to zero in just under six minutes – landing in a small crater within 100 meters of its selected target! That some darn good target shooting!

I heard tell from Michael that you mentioned some sort of Mars lecture going on around here in Pasadena. Can you let me know what info you have on that?

Let's hope everybody involved used metric this time. And here's hoping we show those commie Brits how to land something on Mars.
