(Keep Feeling) Fascination

tpbrcombo mentioned hearing this song recently and I had to check it out. It's such an iconic song of my childhood era. But then I started reading the comments and a bunch of kids associate it with GTA Vice City. I played that game a lot when it came out, too, but my associations are obviously totally different. Part of me feels kind of ripped off, like they are corrupting my memory, but the other half feels glad that a whole new generation was exposed to such a cool song and have their own memories built around it. I guess I feel that way about a lot of re-treaded stuff. Huh, I need an 80s icon. Here we go.

Also, have you noticed that, when LJ is loading a page lately, it makes all sorts of weird calls to other sites? It's kind of obnoxious.

That is like the perpetual horror of working at a university. Our work study students are always sharing these gems with me, like "Elizabeth, have you ever heard of this random song that Rihanna sampled in SOS?" and then I have a small stroke. After I recover, I give them a whole lecture (whether they want it or not) on Soft Cell and Marc Almond and Bronski Beat and Jimmy Somerville and the Communards, so presumably they learn something at college.

The Communards are, like, MY FAVORITE!

Haha, I love the music in GTA:VC! It's in that historical zone for me where I know I heard most of it on the radio as a child, but have no actual memories tied to it.

I never thought about the whole "corrupting the memory" angle, because I acquired the odd dancehall number on the strength of GTA something or other (VC Stories? It's the guy getting ready for the dancehall tonight, etc) that I would never have been exposed to IRL.

I wonder if there's some rasta reading this reply and protesting "CORRUPTING I AND I MEMORIE, MON."

Don't worry, mon, every ting ees IRIE!
