When I certified for scuba diving up there, running into one of these was my biggest hope.

Why? Did you want to die?

Because they're cool. Also, they're not really all that aggressive.

There have been cases of giant octopuses in aquariums seeing fish in other tanks and at night leaving their tanks, going over the other to eat, and returning back their own tank.

They also learn mazes faster than rats and are reasonably intelligent. Plus, when you dive you generally have a knife on you and so long as you panic you'll be able to kill the octopus long before it gets you dead.

But mostly because they're cool. Of course, I'd be happy to see the sharks too.

I was thinking along those lines, too. At many sites an octopus would be among the top coveted species sightings. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) the ones found are usually not much larger than one's hand.

Don't freak out, dude. It was all fake--I saw the zipper on the back of the octopus costume.
